Artistes médiatiques autochtones et non autochtones collaborent lors de la Journée internationale des femmes 2006

Afin de souligner la Journée internationale des femmes le 8 mars 2006 prochain, Femmes Autochtones du Québec (FAQ), Studio XX, Upgrade Montréal vous invitent à une soirée de performances et de discussion intitulée Remix : voix de femmes autochtones - une manifestation artistique contre la violence en célébration de la Journée internationale des femmes, à la Société des arts technologiques (SAT).

Un sujet encore tabou, la violence est une problématique qui touche énormément de femmes. L’événement veut sensibiliser le public à la violence (physique, psychologique, économique, politique et sociale) subie par les femmes autochtones au Québec et au Canada. La soirée débutera avec une performance de la chanteuse algonquine Fanny Wylde et l’artiste sonore montréalaise Alexis O’Hara, alliant chants traditionnels et sonorités électroniques, suivi d’une performance de conte moderne de l’artiste médiatique Mélissa M. Dupuis. L’artiste multidisciplinaire abénaquise Christine Sioui présentera une version du mythe de la création huron-wendatt dans une installation multimédia intitulée Tortue et Femme céleste, tandis que les artistes inuits Taqralik Partridge et Nina Segalowitz, ayant collaboré en 2005 avec l’Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, interpréteront quelques chants de gorge. Pour clore la soirée, une table-ronde composée d’intervenantes en promotion de la non-violence autochtone viendront apporter quelques pistes de réflexion sur le phénomène de la violence. De plus, le 5e numéro de .dpi, le périodique électronique du Studio XX, sera lancé lors de l’événement. Également, l’implication de jeunes artistes autochtones grâce à la participation de terminus1525.ca.

Les organismes : _Femmes Autochtones du Québec est un organisme à but non lucratif fondé en 1974 pour représenter les efforts des femmes autochtones du Québec et appuyer les efforts de ces dernières dans l’amélioration de leurs conditions de vie. _Depuis sa fondation en 1996, le Studio XX – un centre d’artistes engagé dans l’exploration, la création et la critique en art technologique – souligne la Journée des femmes en diffusant des œuvres provocant la réflexion dans un contexte cyberféministe. _À chaque mois depuis 2004, Upgrade Montréal tient bénévolement une soirée intime de discussion en lien avec la culture, l’art et la technologie, habituellement à la Société des arts technologiques (SAT). Upgrade Montréal fait partie du réseau international Upgrade de 19 villes à travers le monde.

C’est la première fois et avec grand enthousiasme que FAQ s’associe à des organismes artistiques engagés afin d’élargir un dialogue sur la non-violence dans le but de trouver des solutions pour mettre fin à la violence tout en célébrant les femmes autochtones, leurs pratiques artistiques, ainsi que leur force en tant que femmes engagées. L’événement est ouvert à tous et toutes, et l’entrée est libre. Les portes ouvrent à 19h à la Société des arts technologiques (1195 St-Laurent).

Aboriginal and Non Aboriginal media artists collaborate on International Women’s Day 2006

Montréal, February 23nd 2006 _ Marking International Women’s Day, on March 8th 2006, Quebec Native Women (QNW), Studio XX, and Upgrade Montréal invites you to an evening of performances and discussion entitled Remix : Voices of Aboriginal Women – Artists Demonstrating Against Violence in Celebration of International Women’s Day, at the Society for Arts and Technology (SAT).

While violence remains a taboo problem that affects many women, the event is meant to raise awareness regarding this reality (of physical, psychological, economical, political and social nature) faced by Aboriginal women of Quebec and Canada. The evening will begin with a performance by Algonquin singer Fanny Wylde and Montreal audio artist Alexis O’Hara, combining traditional singing and electronic sounds, which will be followed by a modern storytelling performance by media artist Mélissa M. Dupuis. Multidisciplinary Abenaki artist, Christine Sioui, will present her version of the Huron-Wendatt creation myth within a multimedia installation called Tortue et Femme céleste, while artists Taqralik Partridge and Nina Segalowitz, who have collaborated with the Montreal Symphonic Orchestra in 2005, will perform throat singing. In closing the evening, a roundtable will take place involving diverse community workers in the promotion of Aboriginal non-violence in order to deepen the reflection about violence. During the event, the 5th issue of .dpi, Studio XX’s online periodical, will be launched. Finally, the event also welcomes the involvement of young Aboriginal artists with the participation of terminus1525.ca.

The organisations: _Quebec Native Women is a non-profit organisation founded in 1974 in order to represent Aboriginal Women of Quebec and to support their efforts in the improvement of their daily lives. _Since its foundation in 1996, Studio XX – an artist centre engaged in the exploration, creation and critique of technological art – marks International Women’s Day via the dissemination of works prompting reflection within a cyberfeminist context. _Every month since 2004, Upgrade Montréal holds on a volunteer-basis an intimate gathering related to culture, art and technology, usually at the Society for Arts and Technology (SAT). Upgrade Montréal is part of an international network with Upgrades in 19 cities across the globe.

It is for the first time and with great enthusiasm that QNW collaborates with artistic and engaged organisations in order to open up the dialogue on non-violence with the aim of finding solutions to end violence while also celebrating Aboriginal women, their artistic practice, as well as their empowerment. The event is open to all, and is free. Doors open at 7pm at the Society for Arts and Technology (1195 St-Laurent).
