Reel Music Competition

Film has always had a close relationship with music from the earliest days when silent films were accompanied by musicians playing the soundtrack live and giving the audience vital emotional cues. Movies were the single largest source of employment for instrumental musicians (at least in America) at the height of the silent era and music has continued to be used to great effect in modern film – imagine the Psycho shower scene without the string section punctuating the stabbing knife. Today silent film is being revived by filmmakers like Guy Maddin and composers such as Carl Davis through the creation of new silent movies as well as writing new orchestral scores for silent classics.

Up to eight composers will be selected to create scores for Reel Music's selection of 5 minute silent films. Vic! toria Symphony Conductor-in-Residence Giuseppe Pietraroia and Composer-in-Residence Tobin Stokes, along with a jury of composers and film directors will choose eight composers from across the country to write original music for five minutes of classic silent film. The finished works will be performed for the public on February 23rd, 2007.
