circonstances? Ce que l’artiste multidisciplinaire
Donald Lawrence aime par-dessus tout, c’est la revisiter
en utilisant paradoxalement des moyens simples qui renvoient à la
mer et à ses paysages. Ses œuvres portent fréquemment
la trace de techniques maritimes employées au XIXe
siècle, comme des appareils photo à sténopé qu’il
confectionne lui-même à partir d’éléments épars
ou encore des installations à caractère marin
comme Torhamvan/Ferryland, inspirée d’une épave échouée à Terre-Neuve.
Biographie
Originaire de Calgary (1963), Donald Lawrence est titulaire
d’un baccalauréat en beaux-arts de l’Université de
Victoria et d’une maîtrise en beaux-arts de
l’Université York. Il dirige le Département
des arts visuels et des arts d’interprétation
de la Thompson Rivers University à Kamloops, en
Colombie-Britannique.
Dans The Sled, The Underwater Pinhole Photography Project
et Torhamvan/Ferryland, recourant à la photographie, à la
sculpture, au dessin et aux installations, il raconte des
histoires de voyages et d’inventions mécaniques
mettant en scène la culture de la ville et celle
de la nature sauvage. L’artiste est lui-même
grand amateur de kayak de mer, une activité qui
l’a mené en Alaska, dans le Maine et au large
de l’Écosse, dans les Hébrides extérieures.
Ses récentes expositions s’intitulent Ice
Follies (W.K.P. Kennedy Gallery), Image and Apparatus (Museum
London) et CAMPsites (Walter Phillips Gallery). Dans Proximities:
Artists’ Statements and Their Works et Court House,
il démontre son intérêt pour un univers à la
croisée de la pratique artistique et de la recherche
universitaire. Donald Lawrence est également chercheur
principal dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche-création
parrainé par le Conseil de recherches en sciences
humaines du Canada.

Though technology
exists in a variety of realms (in science, in art, in the
garage, etc.) it is not stable in any
of them. Rather, it is continually re-tooled, adapted
and sometimes salvaged as circumstances determine. Lawrence's
projects engage him most when technology is re-imagined
for his own needs, typically resulting in a low-tech
approach merged with an interest in the ocean landscape.
Traces of nineteenth century maritime technology are
often present, whether in the underwater pinhole cameras
Lawrence cobbles together from plumbing and other hardware,
or in the folly-like installation Torhamvan/Ferryland,
derived from a Newfoundland shipwreck.
Biography
Born in Calgary (1963), Donald Lawrence has a
BFA from the University of Victoria, an MFA from York University
and is Chair of Visual and Performing Arts at Thompson
Rivers University in Kamloops, BC. Through such bodies
of work as The Sled, The Underwater Pinhole Photography
Project and Torhamvan/Ferryland Lawrence uses combinations
of photography, sculpture, drawing and installation to
relate stories of travel and mechanical invention to broader
interests in the meeting place of urban and wilderness
culture; his specific interest in sea kayaking – a
pursuit which has taken him to Alaska, Maine, and Scotland’s
Outer Hebrides. Recent exhibitions include Ice Follies
with the W.K.P. Kennedy Gallery, Image and Apparatus at
Museum London, and CAMPsites at the Walter Phillips Gallery.
Projects such as Proximities: Artists’ Statements
and Their Works and Court House represent Lawrence’s
interest in the meeting place of artistic production and
academic inquiry; he is currently the lead researcher of
a Research/Creation project, through the Social Sciences
and Humanities Research Council.
