Dans le cadre de la deuxième conférence du cycle Geek-Concordia, Rita McKeough nous entretiendra de son œuvre. Cette artiste qui se consacre aux performances et aux installations discutera de sa démarche d’exploration des robots électromécaniques en tant qu’acteurs essentiels à son art.
Mme McKeough a toujours été intéressée par les enjeux de société, l’idéalisme et le changement social. Depuis 25 ans, elle se consacre à l’interaction entre espaces architecturaux et principes de conception, allant jusqu’à faire tomber les murs ou à les entamer. Elle construit des machines électroniques et des systèmes mécaniques avec les conseils techniques d’amis et crée des ensembles architecturaux, naturels et artificiels, où elle réinvente sa relation au milieu bâti.

Biographie

Installée à Calgary, Rita McKeough crée des œuvres sonores, des installations mettant en scène les nouveaux médias et des performances artistiques. Elle a fait de nombreuses expositions depuis 1977, au Canada et dans le monde entier. Son parcours l’a amenée à enseigner dans plusieurs écoles d’art canadiennes et à jouer de la batterie dans différents groupes de musique. Elle s’intéresse depuis toujours à la culture de l’autogestion artistique, aux initiatives communautaires et aux projets musicaux.
Rita McKeough accorde une grande importance à l’aide que ses amis et la communauté lui apportent dans sa création. Née à Antigonish, en Nouvelle-Écosse, elle a obtenu un BFA en médias d’impression et sculpture de l’Université de Calgary, puis une maîtrise en beaux-arts du Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, en 1979.

In this talk, the second of the Geek-Concordia series, installation and performance artist Rita McKeough will give an overview of her work. McKeough will discuss her exploration of performing objects as collaborators in her work. She has always been drawn to social issues, idealism and social change. In her work over the past 25 years she has consistently interacted with architectural spaces and implicated architectural systems, often destroying and consuming the walls themselves. She builds electronic and mechanical devices with the technical mentorship of her friends and creates artificial natural and architectural environments where she re-imagines her relationship to the built environment.

Biography

Calgary based audio, media installation and performance artist Rita McKeough has exhibited extensively in Canada since 1977 and has presented her work internationally. She has taught at various art institutions throughout Canada and has been a drummer in various bands. McKeough has maintained a commitment to artist run centers, community based art and music initiatives.
She insists that she has been fortunate to have the support and assistance of her friends and community to produce her work. Born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, McKeough studied printmaking and sculpture at the University of Calgary where she received her BFA. She went on to study at the NSCAD University where she was awarded her MFA in 1979.
