Au cours de la conférence de clôture du cycle Geek-Concordia, Jessica Field présentera un aperçu général de son travail en robotique et en intelligence artificielle. L’artiste crée des pièces de théâtre jouées par des robots qui ont chacun leur comportement propre. Dans ses mises en scène, c’est l’environnement qui détermine la trame narrative tandis que les acteurs-robots jouent les personnages. Chacun est délibérément programmé avec une imperfection qui confère à l’histoire une dimension à la fois tragique et humoristique.

Pour Jessica Field, les robots sont utiles pour observer le comportement humain. Sa pratique l’amène à explorer l’influence du milieu culturel sur les êtres humains, le pouvoir des stéréotypes sur nos comportements, et le double besoin d’exprimer ce que nous désirons et de sentir que notre vie a un sens.


Biographie

Née à Pickering, en Ontario, Jessica Field a étudié la sculpture et les installations et découvert les arts électroniques au Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD). Elle a poursuivi ses études à l’Université Concordia où elle vient de terminer une maîtrise en beaux-arts. Elle anime depuis 2003 des ateliers sur l’électronique. Elle a bénéficié de subventions pour réaliser la majorité de ses œuvres, qui ont été exposées à Montréal et à Toronto.

Jessica Field - Field Studies: Tragically Flawed Robots

In the closing lecture of the Geek-Concordia series, Jessica Field will present an overview of her work in robotics and Artificial Intelligence. By creating robots with specific characteristics and placing them in staged environments, Field creates theatrical robot plays that highlight each robot's unique behavioural tendencies. In these dramas, the environment determines the course of the plot, and the robot actors perform in character. Each robot is intentionally programmed with a Tragic Flaw,resulting in a narrative that is both humorous and tragic.

For Field, robots are a useful medium in which to make observations on human behaviour. Her investigations question the extent to which we are affected by our cultural milieu, the power of stereotypes to determine our behaviour, and our need to both exert our will and to feel that our lives have purpose.

Biography

Born in Pickering, Ontario, Jessica Field studied sculpture/installation and discovered electronic art at OCAD where she received her AOCAD. She went on to study at Concordia University where she has recently completed an MFA.
Field has exhibited in both Montreal and in Toronto, and has been teaching workshops in electronics since 2003. She has been fortunate to receive project grants to produce most of her work to date.
