CIAM Ressources Allocations for Students

Knowledge / Workshops / Labs / Equipment

Program Objectives

  1. To support the creation of masters and doctoral thesis projects in areas of study that relate to one or more of CIAM's research axes.
  2. To support creation, experimentation, and prototype development that may lead to the production of masters and doctoral thesis projects.
  3. Facilitate theoretical and technical development and enrichment of the student’s art practice by providing access to workshops, training sessions or other opportunites for enrichment.

Eligibility

CIAM awards ressources to students to facilitate: experimentation with new media, the integration of new media into students' research projects, and the dissemination of graduate work that is innovative in the field of media arts.

Students enrolled in masters and doctoral programs at Concordia University, UQAM and the Université de Montréal are eligible to apply. The top Student Allocation Program’s priority is to help thesis projects in the field of new media arts. However, projects not related to  thesis work may be considered if they are accompanied by an invitation from a recognized arts organization to present/exhibit in a professional context (gallery, museum, theatre). 

Applicants must receive a recommendation from their Thesis Advisor who must, in turn, be a CIAM Researcher.

Ressources

The ressources offered by CIAM to eligible students are:

  • equipment loans from the CIAM equipment pool.
  • research labs and spaces for specific periods of time
  • workshops on various technologies and softwares for media creation and management
  • technical conseling and support

Any student having received one or more of these services for a project has to file a report at project completion or sooner if the project spreads over a long perod of time. You can find all the details about this at the bottom of this page.

Labs and reaserch spaces

Rooms, labs and other spaces may be made available by contacting the project coordinator of your participating university. To find out who is the project coordinator for your university, please consult our « Contact » page.

Workshops

CIAM workshop are prepared timely based on demand from the community. A survey will be issued at the beginning of each session to evaluate these needs.

Consulting and support

CIAM project coordinators are entitled to spend time on consulting and technical advices to eligible students. all you need to do is contacting the project coordinator of your participating university. Reports

Interim report, frequency and content

For projects that require more than six months to complete, one or more interim reports must be submitted in order to inform CIAM of the progress and evolution of the project. These reports, filed at least every 6 months, should include;

  • One or two digital images demonstrating the current state of the project. These may be photographs or drawings, and should be submitted as .JPG images measuring 1024 x 768.
  • A short text, maximum one page in length, describing the current state of the project.

Final reports

Once the project has been completed, a final report must be submitted within one month. This report should document public presentations of the project and shall include;

  • Five (5) digital images in .JPG format measuring 1024 x 768. These may be  photographs or drawings.
  • If the project is a performance, animation or installation, include one (1) Quicktime video, MOV format (Sorenson 3 compression), 320 x 240, with an approximate duration of 2 minutes.
  • A description of the project’s evolution and outcome, including how the final work relates to the original proposal and if/where the work was presented (maximum 5 pages).
  • A budget outlining all expenditures.

How to file your report

If the interim or final report can be contained within a single .zip file of 35 megabytes or less, submit it directly to http://www.ciam-arts.org/rapports/.

Otherwise, the report must be submitted directly to the Project Coordinator of your university on cd-rom.
