CIAM Allocations for
Researchers Members
Eligible Projects
Professionals and technicians for workshops
Professionals may be hired to lead workshops related to specific software, creative workshops or a workshop for a group of CIAM members. Students from graduate programs may also be hired to lead workshops. They will be remunerated accordingly.
Visiting Artists/ Researchers
A budget has allocated to host visiting artists and researchers for a period ranging from several days to several months. The proposal should include:
- a description of the proposed activities,
- the artists’ c.v.,
- the academic programs implicated,
- the professors and students involved,
- a list of partners (museums, institutes, galleries, departments, etc),
- the outcomes for CIAM,
- a detailed calendar of events and a detailed budget
Lectures/ Talks
CIAM also funds lectures/talks by visiting artists and academics. Eligible expenses include travel, accommodations, a speaker’s fee and posters. Proposals for this type of project should include:
- the speaker’s c.v.,
- the title of the conference,
- and a detailed budget.
Colloquia
CIAM organizes colloquia and symposia that are thematically related to research conducted by CIAM members. CIAM may contribute up to $10,000 for a large-scale colloquium or symposium. In addition, researchers may receive a course remission towards their involvement in the organization of such an event. All proposals for this type of project should include:
- a description of the event,
- a detailed program,
- a list of partners (departments, silent partners, contributing organizations, institutions),
- and a detailed budget.
CIAM also provides grant-writing assistance to researchers who are seeking funding from other organizations for these types of events.
Travel
Applications for travel allocations (maximum $2000) will be considered in the following order of priority:
- Invitation to participate in a conference, symposium, exhibition, or international colloquium. Presentations delivered at lower profile colloquia, courses, and events will also be considered, but at a lower priority level.
- Participation in an event where the researcher is representing CIAM.
- Participation in an event that is of significant interest to the researcher’s axe, but where the researcher will not officially present his or her work.
All applications must include the following :
- A description of the event, including relevant documentation (poster, programs, official invitations).
- A letter of invitation, if applicable.
- A detailed budget (do NOT include invoices, receipts, plane tickets, etc.)
Dissemination (Publicity, advertising, etc.)
CIAM may cover publicity costs associated with an event that will be of benefit to the CIAM community as a whole.
Publications
LCIAM can contribute to the production of a publication (catalogue, book, cd-rom, website) up to a maximum amount of $2,500.
The criteria are as follows :
- Researchers may apply for this type of funding once per year.
- A detailed budget must be provided.
- Include a description of the publication, including the date of publication.
- The publication must bear CIAM’s logo.
- A copy of the publication must be submitted to CIAM. Please note: With respect to electronic publications, CIAM does not fund the creation of actual works but rather publications consisting of documentation;

External Training
Funds are available for researchers to receive training or to participate in workshops offered outside of CIAM.
Please provide a description of the event and include relevant documentation, as well as a letter of recommendation from your research axe and a detailed budget
General Rules
Criteria of Admissibility for Researcher Allocations
- The application must include a description of the proposed activity and a detailed budget.
- The applicant must always have the support of their research axe.
- In the case of large-scale projects, researchers must also seek funding from other organizations. CIAM may provide consultants to assist researchers with these types of external funding applications.
- Applicants should not request more than $10,000 for any one project.
- In addition to or instead of financial assistance, CIAM may also provide services to researchers.
- CIAM does not provide financial assistance for translation costs associated with research activities (such as website content, project descriptions, texts, etc). These costs are the responsibility of Hexagram or, in the case of Concordia, may be provided by the University.
- In the case of collaborations with visiting artists or researchers, honoraria are generally reserved for independent researchers or artists, and are normally not budgeted for individuals affiliated with academic institutions. However, this rule is subject to the committee’s discretion and each application will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Any activity that receives financial support from CIAM must be open to all members of the CIAM community and must be widely publicized.
- CIAM must be recognized along with other sponsors. Introductions, opening comments, and all printed materials should acknowledge CIAM’s support.
Appropriate documentation is required for the reimbursement of expenditures.
Researchers who have received financial support from CIAM must submit a report to Techwatch in the form of a scientific report describing their activities.
General Application Guidelines
All applications should be submitted directly to CIAM’s secretary (UQAM, J-R445). Applications will be reviewed by CIAM’s Steering Committee, and should be received at least one week prior to the next scheduled meeting. Please check the Meetings Schedule located in the right column of this page and of the Acivities page for the date and time of the next meeting.
Applications must include the following information:
- The name of the applicant
- The university with which the applicant is affiliated
- The department
- The applicant’s telephone number
- The applicant’s e-mail address
- The objective of the proposal
