Deadline for Abstract Submission: March 31, 2006
We are putting together the preliminary program for the 6th International Conference on Complex Systems. Because of a delay in the program committee meeting, the ICCS abstract submission deadline has been extended to March 31. However, it would be best to submit the abstracts as soon as possible. After this date, abstracts will be accepted only if space is available.
Students and postdocs should submit papers about recent advances in their research. Generally, they will be given opportunities to give short talks or, if they prefer, poster presentations. We expect to have funds to assist students and postdocs in attending the conference.

This position is responsible for keeping people and projects on track. Responsibilities include scheduling, coordinating and attending meetings, drafting minutes and agendas, preparing correspondence, creating and establishing a secure and efficient filing system, and assisting with the management of a busy education division.

Open call for Contribution and Collaboration
ÉVIDENCE : INTER-DOCUMENTATION est un projet indépendant de recherche et de documentation. Il s’agit de répertorier la documentation existante sur les pratiques contemporaines en arts visuels d’artistes, de commissaires, de critiques ou d’historiens noirs. Le terme ‘Noir’ désigne dans ce contexte toute personne d’ascendance africaine, afro-caribéenne, afro-américaine ou afro-canadienne. Le projet a pour but de documenter et recueillir du matériel sur ces pratiques artistiques : art vidéo, nouveaux médias, installation, sculpture, performance, photographie, peinture, art sonore ou audio, théorie et critique d’art, afin de les étudier dans leurs contextes historique et global. Cette recherche de documents vise la période de 1970 à nos jours. La première phase met en relief la scène artistique canadienne.

EVIDENCE: INTER-DOCUMENTATION is an independent research and documentation project that surveys Contemporary Visual art practices by Black artists, curators, critics, theorists and art historians. Within the context of this project the term “Black” is defined as people of African, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-American, Afro-Canadian descent. The aim of the project is to document and collect materials on contemporary art practices (video art, new media, performance art, installation, sculpture, photography, painting, audio and sound art, art criticism and theory), as well as establishing a comprehensive historical context for addressing these practices. This research and documentation project focuses on the period from 1970s to the present. The first phase of EVIDENCE: INTER-DOCUMENTATION places emphasis on the Canadian Art scene.

Artiste montréalaise se consacrant à la peinture, Marie-Claude Bouthillier investit de façon très personnelle les possibilités formelles de ce médium : les textures, les surfaces, l’espace… On la reconnaît principalement pour ses abstractions panoramiques, créées par l’inscription de ses initiales « mcb » des milliers de fois sur la toile. Dans son travail récent, l’artiste questionne la notion d’identité par le biais de l’autoportrait, en plus de poursuivre ses recherches sur le motif. Ses tableaux et dessins, qu’ils soient paysages, autoportraits ou univers plus abstraits, proposent des espaces visuels enveloppants qui se veulent une interprétation plastique et poétique du monde et de notre rapport au réel.

More of the human brain is devoted to perceptual information processing than any other functions. In the entire development of the individual, perception plays a crucial role. Learning about speech and language, as well, relies on the products of perception. Some of the major questions of speech perception development in infancy are that what are the contributions of maturation and what are the contributions of experience to the development? How the developments of other cognitive functions support the development of speech perception? According to some new theories, in their first year of life, infants use computational strategies to learn about the statistical distribution of sounds and prosody of their first language, and this helps them to learn and recognize words in the speech stream. Recent research, that addressed these issues relying on behavioral and electrophysiological measures, will be presented.

By mere exposure to musical pieces in everyday life, Western listeners acquire sensitivity to the regularities of the tonal system and to the context dependency of musical sounds. This implicitly acquired tonal knowledge allows listeners to develop expectations for future events when listening to a musical sequence. Musical expectations influence the processing of incoming events (with facilitated processing for expected events and increased neural resources for unexpected events) and have been attributed a role for musical expressivity. I will present studies investigating musical expectations in the perception of melodies and chord sequences, notably by manipulating tonal function and temporal occurrence.

Ana Rewakowicz is an artist and researcher born in Poland, of Ukrainian origin, now living and working in Montréal, Canada. She received a BFA at Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto and MFA at Concordia University in Montréal in 2001. She works with inflatables and explores relations between temporal, portable architecture, the body and the environment. Her installations, videos and interventions have been exhibited and experienced in Canada, Mexico, France, Scotland, Austria, Belgium and Bulgaria. Her latest Dressware project was presented at International Symposium of Electronic Art (ISEA 2004) in Tallinn, Estonia, Musée d’art contemporaine de Montréal and most recently at Foreman Art Gallery at Bishop’s University in Lennoxville, Québec, Canada.

Mr. Kleeblatt’s groundbreaking exhibition of 2002: Mirroring Evil: Nazi Imagery/Recent Art highlighted the work of 13 international artists who appropriate Nazi imagery as a commentary on contemporary values.

Concordia MFA Studio Arts Visiting Artist Program - Artist talk

Dont Rhine is a founding member of the Los Angeles-based audio activist group Ultra-red. Launched in 1994, Ultra-red grew out of Rhine's experiences as an AIDS activist with ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) / Los Angeles as well as being an organizer with the Los Angeles needles exchange, Clean Needles Now. Since then, Ultra-red has gone on to develop a range of projects around struggles for public housing residents, global justice and immigration. Currently, Rhine is working on a new project that returns to AIDS activism within the contexts of globalization and justice for migrants. The project, titled "Jack Tactic", brings togetherRhine's love of House music and the formal strategies of Musique Concrète.

Cette exposition collective est un tremplin autant qu’une approche kaléidoscopique sur la relève montréalaise. Unis autour du désir de sortir au dehors, de transiter de l’universitaire au professionnel, les travaux nous convient au regard d’une génération montante à travers des pratiques singulières. Élaborés sur un an, ces projets regroupent une variété de médiums, dont le dessin, la peinture, la sculpture, la performance, le cinétique, le médiatique, l’installation.

In transit from university to a professional context, the works offer singular artistic experiences. Over a year in production, they reflect a variety of mediums, including drawing, painting, sculpture, kinetics, performance, time-based media and installation.

EICV primera les oeuvres de vidéastes émergents de l’Université de Montréal, de l’Université Concordia, de l’UQAC et de l’UQAM. Au nombre des artistes invités, en plus des présentations vidéo de la programmation officielle, nous comptons Ghislain Poirier, ainsi que des invités spéciaux en musique! L’EICV réitère la nécessité et l’importance d’offrir un lieu d’échange privilégié, permettant au public, aux créateurs et aux intéressés du milieu artistique d’enrichir et de renouveler leurs regards sur le médium vidéographique.

In addition to the official program, artistic performances from Ghislain Poirier, as well as music from our very special guests will make the event complete. The EICV reiterates the need and the importance of a space of exchange between the public, the artists and the enthusiasts of the artistic milieu. This 15th edition, will be an occasion for us to gather, discuss and refresh our views on the video works of upcoming artists.

Forgeries, Love and other Matters

Forgeries, Love and other Matters est le fruit de la collaboration entre la chorégraphe et danseuse américaine Meg Stuart, le chorégraphe et danseur québécois Benoît Lachambre et le compositeur et musicien américain Hahn Rowe. Ayant travaillé tous trois sur la scène new-yorkaise de l’East Village au milieu des années 80, ils ont continué à se croiser à plusieurs reprises depuis notamment dans No Longer Readymad (1993) de Meg Stuart et dans divers projets collectifs consacrés à l’improvisation tels que Crash Landing (1996-1999) et Not to Know (2002).
