Deadline: January 31, 2007
International Conference organised by CIANT as part of the ENTER festival in the framework of the Leonardo 40th anniversary celebrations. The festival will feature also the first retrospective exhibition of Frank J. Malina.
The conference will explore the major mutations that are affecting the future of our world. We invite papers from artists, scientists and researchers on the evolution of living beings and the societies they constitute, and on modes of knowledge, expression and communication of humans, animals and other forms of life. 'MutaMorphosis' seeks a multiplicity of perspectives as well as a qualified and diverse group of conference participants. The conference will concentrate on the growing interest -- within the worlds of the arts, sciences and technologies -- in EXTREME AND HOSTILE ENVIRONMENTS.

Le Centre SAGAMIE opère un des plus important programme d'artistes en résidence au Canada en recevant annuellement plus de 50 artistes du Québec, du Canada et de l'étranger. Ces artistes sont accueillis pour des séjours intensifs d'expérimentation et de création dans un imposant laboratoire informatique à la fine pointe des technologies : quatre imprimantes numériques grand format (largeur d'impression de 60 po.) utilisant des encres pigmentées, six postes de travail MacIntosh G4 et G5, tablettes graphiques, scanners et appareil photo-numérique haute définition, etc.

The SAGAMIE Centre runs one of the largest artist-in-residence programs in Canada, hosting more than 50 artists each year from Quebec, the rest of Canada, and abroad. These artists stay at the Centre for intensive periods of artistic creativity and experimentation in an extraordinary computer laboratory with cutting-edge technology, including four large-format pigmented-ink digital printers (print width 60 inches), six Macintosh G4 and G5 workstations, graphics tablets, scanners, and high-definition digital photography equipment.

sur une technique non immersive que nous avons développée
et où l’usager
se retrouve à l’intérieur d’un
espace 3D modélisé grâce à de
vraies esquisses (RVD ; Dorta, 2004), cette technique
va aujourd’hui plus loin car elle permet au designer
d’esquisser l’espace à partir de l’intérieur
d’un sketch de manière immersive, en temps
réel.

S’attaquant aux diverses représentations masculines peuplant la culture populaire, Jean-François Leboeuf propose une oeuvre installative surchargée de référents. C’est dans un brouhaha de signes, d’images et de médiums que l’identité de l’artiste est ironiquement contre-imagée. Le travail de Jean-François Leboeuf prend racine dans notre «réalité fragmentée», dans cette surcharge d’informations et ce flux d’images générées par les diverses sources médiatiques nous entourant. Dans ce monde surcodé, où tout peut sembler irréel, Jean-François Leboeuf s’intéresse à la précarité de notre identité, aussi bien individuelle que collective.

Works/Oeuvres satellites présente une
série d’oeuvres vidéographiques d’artistes
internationaux émergents. Il
s’agit d’un programme qui cherche à refléter
l’état actuel de l’art vidéographique,
en particulier dans son lien intime à l’espace
performatif. De l’intervention en espace public
au pastiche du vidéoclip, d’un discours
de «speaker’s corner» improvisé à une
orgie de pop soda, les œuvres traduisent une propension
pour le jeu, ainsi qu’une volonté d’entraîner
le spectateur dans une aire où toutes les attentes
se voient déroutées.

Everything You Thought We'd
Forgotten by Jason E. Lewis collects together a series
of text-based
interactive works that explore the border
lands between conflicting cultural identities, memory
and history, and the visual and the textual. Common to
all these works is a formal concern with how kinetics
and interactivity can be used to expand how digital texts
can be written, read and performed. The exhibition includes
What They Speak When They Speak to Me, an interactive
poem about mistaken identity that is read by tracing
a fingertip through a mass of writhing letters.

La Tête au ventre; une exposition rassemblant des œuvres
dans les médiums de la sculpture, de la vidéo,
du collage et de l’installation. Au cœur de
cette exposition se retrouvent, en relation au corps
humain, les notions de grotesque, d’irrévérence,
d’indécence et de renversement des rôles
sociaux. Selon le commissaire Mathieu Beauséjour
: « La Tête au ventre c’est la fête
de notre chair – de notre viande – qui s’installe
au milieu des œuvres d’art, pour être
parmi elles, pour les regarder d’égal à égal,
pour s’y reconnaître. En rabaissant notre
pensée à notre ventre, je souhaite dégager
ce qu’il y a de profondément humain dans
notre rapport à l’Autre; non pas sur une
base identitaire, mais plutôt sur une base charnelle ».

The Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery presents La
Tête au ventre, featuring sculpture, video, collage
and installation. Central to this exhibition is the notion
of the grotesque, of bawdy and irreverent behaviour,
and the overturning of social norms relating to the human
form. Curator Mathieu Beauséjour writes: “La
Tête au ventre is a celebration of flesh – our
flesh – which circulates among these works of art,
becomes part of them, looks them in the eye, recognizes
itself in them. By thinking through our stomachs, we
uncover what is profoundly human in our relationship
to the Other; not in terms of identity, but in terms
of carnality.”

by Frank Popper
In From Technological to Virtual
Art, respected historian of art and technology Frank Popper
traces the
development of immersive, interactive new media art from
its historical antecedents through today's digital, multimedia,
and networked art. Popper shows that contemporary virtual
art is a further refinement of the technological art
of the late twentieth century and also a departure from
it. What is new about this new media art, he argues,
is its humanization of technology, its emphasis on interactivity,
its philosophical investigation of the real and the virtual,
and its multisensory nature. He argues further that what
distinguishes the artists who practice virtual art is
their combined commitment to aesthetics and technology.
Their "extra-artistic" goals -- linked to their
aesthetic intentions -- concern not only science and
society but also basic human needs and drives.
